HC Deb 24 July 1956 vol 557 cc183-4
8. Mr. Ede

asked the Secretary of State for War what entry is made on the discharge papers of a man discharged on security grounds to indicate the reason for such discharge.

Mr. Head

The entry is, His services being no longer required for the purpose for which he enlisted.

Mr. Ede

Is that fair to other people who may employ him?

Mr. Callaghan

Is it fair to him?

Mr. Head

I think that if we were to put on the conduct sheet particulars of the matter there would be strong complaints that it would be unfair to the man in seeking future employment.

9. Mr. Ede

asked the Secretary of State for War how far, in the case of a man discharged from the Army on security grounds, the assessment of his character is affected by the reason for discharge.

Mr. Head

It is not affected.
