HC Deb 17 July 1956 vol 556 c1021
21. Mr. Wigg

asked the Secretary of State for War the number of British officers and non-commissioned officers remaining in the employ of the Gold Coast Government after the abolition of West Africa Command on 1st July, 1956.

Mr. Head

Four hundred and sixteen.

Mr. Wigg

Will the Minister be good enough to say whether these officers and other ranks are serving contracts the terms of which have been agreed by the War Office? Furthermore, are they volunteers, or have they been posted there?

Mr. Head

In answer to the first part of that supplementary question, all this was gone into with care at the time when the Gold Coast went on to a different basis. I would not like to answer the point about volunteers without notice, but I do know that the recent improvement in terms of service in the Gold Coast has very considerably put up the percentage of volunteers.
