17 and 18. Mr. Doughty

asked the Secretary of State for War (1) what barracks in Great Britain are now being modernised and brought up to modern standards;

(2) what new construction of barracks is now taking place in Great Britain.

Mr. Head

Sixteen new barracks are being built or rebuilt and 10 barracks are being modernised. I am circulating details in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Doughty

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the number of 10 barracks being modernised is wholly insufficient? There are many old barracks in this country occupying valuable sites upon which no work is being done and in respect of which work is overdue.

Mr. Head

I have only a limited amount of material, money and labour available, and I think that, on the whole, it is better to rebuild and make first-class new barracks than to tinker with old barracks and waste money in that way.
