HC Deb 03 July 1956 vol 555 cc1134-5
6. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Labour what special efforts have been made by his Department to persuade gipsies to undertake useful employment, in view of the special conditions affecting this community.

Mr. Iain Macleod

My Department would be very willing to give any assistance it could in this way if its help is sought.

Mr. Dodds

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that in other European countries enlightened policies are followed so as to find first-class craftsmen and musicians among the younger gipsies, whilst we make Romany life impossible, treating them as outcasts? Does he not think that we should do better to put our own house in order rather than criticise other countries for the way in which they are dealing with their human problems?
