HC Deb 02 July 1956 vol 555 cc993-4
53 and 54. Mr. Farey-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) whether he will make a statement on the present situation in Korea, in view of the withdrawal of the Neutral Commission and the build-up of armed forces in Northern Korea, including jet bombers;

(2) in view of the increasing tendency to neutralism which lack of settlement of the Korean problem entails to all Asiatic peoples, whether he will raise the question of a General Korean settlement at the Conference of Commonwealth Prime Ministers.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

My noble Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State made a full statement on the situation in Korea on 4th June. Since that date the Neutral Nations Inspection Teams have been withdrawn from both North and South Korea to the demilitarised zone without incident. As the Prime Minister stated on 28th June, it is not the practice to disclose individual topics for discussion at the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' meetings.

Mr. Farey-Jones

Will my right hon. and learned Friend bear in mind that all the uncommitted peoples in Asia are watching this problem with particular anxiety and, until it is settled, they are unable to look to the West with confidence and hope and they may succumb to Communist domination?

Mr. Lloyd

I certainly share with my hon. Friend the desire to get the Korean question finally settled.
