HC Deb 02 July 1956 vol 555 c971
19. Mrs. L. Jeger

asked the Minister of Health if he will take steps to make notifiable to medical officers of health cases of burns and scalds in the home treated by general practitioners or hospitals, in order that health visitors and other qualified persons may visit the homes concerned to give advice and to ensure that the law is complied with.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

My right hon. Friend has no power to do this, but he is considering what information concerning the frequency of such incidents hospitals can be asked to provide for medical officers of health.

Mrs. Jeger

In view of the appalling loss of life and the amount of injury arising from home accidents, greater than occur from road accidents, would not the Parliamentary Secretary agree that it is time we really took some positive steps to enlist the help of local authorities in dealing with these terrible accidents, many of which are preventable?

Miss Hornsby-Smith

Considerable educational work on the prevention of accidents is being done by health visitors and home nurses, but I do not think it possible to impose upon general practitioners yet another matter for notification.
