HC Deb 02 July 1956 vol 555 c981
28. Mr. Gibson

asked the Minister of Health what explanation has been given to his Department for the published increases of expenditure on wines and spirits in three leading London hospitals.

Mr. Turton

I assume the hon. Member is referring to Dulwich, St. Francis and St. Giles hospitals which were referred to a month ago in a Sunday newspaper. These hospitals have a high proportion of long stay cases in chronic sick, orthopaedic and tuberculosis units. The alcoholic beverages were principally stout and ale issued to patients on medical prescription.

Mr. Gibson

Is the Minister satisfied that the increase in this expenditure of nearly one-third was justified by a large increase in the number of patients?

Mr. Turton

I understand that the hospital management committee is looking into this matter.

Mr. Cooper

Do I understand that my right hon. Friend has at last decided that a little of what you fancy is likely to do you good?

Mr. Turton

It is certainly of very great value to tuberculosis patients.

Mr. Ede

Since when has stout been a spirit?
