HC Deb 30 January 1956 vol 548 cc574-5
2. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement about the policy of Her Majesty's Government in the Middle East following his recent consultations.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Anthony Nutting)

I should prefer not to anticipate any statement which may be made on my right hon. Friend's return from Washington.

Mr. Fletcher

While I wish the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary all success in their important mission, may I ask whether the Government will bear in mind that it would be a major contribution to the possibility of peace between the Jews and the Arabs if economic aid on a really generous scale were made available to facilitate the resettlement of the refugees?

Mr. Nutting

That consideration is very present in the minds of both my right hon. Friends.
