HC Deb 30 January 1956 vol 548 c575
23. Mr. Patrick Maitland

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is satisfied that present resources and machinery for presenting British views to public opinion in Jordan and other Arab countries, and for meeting Soviet and Egyptian propaganda, are adequate; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nutting

We are already deploying a considerable effort; but, in view of the recent intensification of Communist and other propaganda in the Middle East, Her Majesty's Government have in mind certain additional measures.

Mr. Maitland

Will my right hon. Friend be able shortly to tell us what additional measures are proposed, and whether he can convince us that they are adequate?

Mr. Nutting

They may include extending the Arabic service of the B.B.C, expanding the services of the British Council in the region and increasing the number of visitors who can be brought from Middle Eastern countries to the United Kingdom.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Does that answer mean that jamming is at the moment definitely excluded?
