§ 50. Mr. Warbeyasked the Lord Privy Seal what directions have been given to the Atomic Energy Authority to revise, expand and accelerate its programme for prototype development of nuclear power reactors to meet the transfer of an increasing proportion of accumulated stocks of 1188 plutonium and uranium 235 from military to civil use.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerNone. Sir. There is at present no need for such directions.
§ Mr. WarbeyIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that it would be possible for the Atomic Energy Authoritl, to construct many different and more advanced types of research and prototype reactors if it could be given an assurance of the necessary funds and also an assurance that during the next three, four or five years accumulated stocks of these enriched nuclear fuels would be made available from the military stockpile? Will the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that the Government are looking at the matter from this point of view?
§ Mr. ButlerPerhaps the hon. Gentleman has read certain articles which have appeared in the public Press on the subject of the supply of nuclear fuel. I think he may be satisfied that, in fact, there is available a sufficient supply of nuclear power, but I should like to consider the point which he has made to me before giving him a considered answer.
§ Mr. CallaghanIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is some disturbance and unrest about the Government's apparent lack of information and policy on this matter? Will he soon let us have the statement which a week ago he promised he would make?
§ Mr. ButlerI am aware of the point which the hon. Member raises. I am not in a position to make a statement at present, but I undertake that when I am in a position to do so I will make a statement to give the House the latest information.
