§ 23. Mr. E. Fletcherasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to assist the wives and children of political prisoners in Cyprus.
§ Mr. HareForty families of persons at present detained in Cyprus are being assisted from Cyprus Government funds. Assistance is given on the same terms as to other persons in Cyprus who may be in need.
§ Mr. FletcherYes, but whatever may be the negotiations about an amnesty—and, personally, I hope that the Government will agree to the fullest possible amnesty—surely there is no sort of excuse for inflicting economic hardship on these wives and children?
§ Mr. HareI think the hon. Gentleman would like to know that officers of the Welfare Department make inquiries when 1176 they suspect that there may be hardship, even if no application for assistance has been made.
