§ 55 and 63. Mr. Allaunasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government (1) if he will give an estimate of the approximate effect of the increased rate of interest and the Government's cut in the housing subsidy on the number of council houses built;
(2) whether he is aware that the Government's action in raising interest rates and abolishing the housing subsidy on many types of houses will increase the rent of large numbers of council houses; and whether he will take steps to safeguard the interests of tenants of such houses.
§ Mr. SandysI dealt very fully with this matter in a number of speeches during the passage of the Housing Subsidies Bill, to which I have nothing to add.
§ Mr. AllaunIs the Minister aware of the growing fears among building union leaders of serious unemployment in their industry next year? Will he give reassurance on that point?
§ Mr. MitchisonHas the right hon. Gentleman considered the effect of the rise in the Bank Rate since the statements which he made in connection with his Bill? Will he make a statement as to the effect he expects that that will have, at least on authorities who have to borrow in the open market?
§ Mr. SandysThe additional rise in the Bank Rate should not have an appreciable effect.
§ Mr. AllaunOn a point of order. I addressed a Question to the Minister, Mr. Speaker, but he has not replied or made any attempt to reply.
