HC Deb 20 February 1956 vol 549 cc15-6
20. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what reductions will be made in the capital expenditure of the Central Electricity Authority for 1956–57.

Mr. Aubrey Jones

The original capital programme for 1956–57 has been reduced by £19 million.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Can we have separate figures, please? Bearing in mind that there are still rows of privately-owned houses in Brixton which are still waiting for electric light, how much of this £19 million cut is being borne by the London Electricity Board?

Mr. Jones

I cannot give detailed figures for individual areas. Broadly, the cut falls about equally upon distribution and generation.

Mr. Callaghan

In view of the serious nature of the cuts announced last Friday in relation to all nationalised industries, and the consequential serious effect which this may have upon our other industries, will the Minister make a full statement at an early date giving more details of where these cuts will fall in the electricity, gas and coal industries?

Mr. Jones

If the hon. Gentleman will put down appropriate Questions to me, I shall be pleased to endeavour to enlighten him upon this matter as much as I can.
