HC Deb 16 February 1956 vol 548 cc2511-2
22. Mr. Dye

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food where the raw sugar stored for strategic purposes on the Bexwell airfield in Norfolk was removed to for refining or other purposes.

Mr. Amory

A small part of the sugar was sent to London and the remainder to Greenock and Liverpool.

Mr. Dye

Is not it most uneconomic to dispose of this sugar by sending it to Greenock when there are refineries within a few miles in Norfolk which could have dealt with it?

Mr. Amory

The actual sugar is disposed of to whatever refinery needs it at the time. The distance it is sent does not affect the Government financially, because a flat rate is paid.
