§ 20. Mr. Dyeasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will make a statement on the future import of beef into this country that will serve as a guide to home producers during the next winter fattening season.
Mr. AmoryI do not think that would be useful. Imports are now in private hands, and their volume will depend upon consumer demand here and supplies available from overseas sources.
§ Mr. DyeDoes not the right hon. Gentleman realise that, owing to the present increased quantities of frozen and chilled beef coming into the country, there has been a heavy fall in the price of home-produced fat cattle, against a much higher cost of store cattle and feeding-stuffs, as a result of which the farmers are now losing heavily? Does he think that they will produce as many next year?
Mr. AmoryI would again refer the hon. Gentleman to the existence and safeguard of the guaranteed price.
§ Mr. DyeDoes not the right hon. Gentleman realise that that guaranteed price does not now cover the cost of production?
Mr. AmoryIf that is so, it is just possible that it may arise in the course of the present discussions on the Annual Price Review.
