HC Deb 14 February 1956 vol 548 c2294
Mr. John Parker (Dagenham)

I beg to move, in page 8, line 24, at the end, to insert: or, where the Minister is satisfied that that person was the tenant of a dwelling in that area belonging to another local authority, from that other local authority. This Amendment arises out of a point made during the Committee stage which mainly concerns my constituency, but which also concerns any other area in which there might happen to be local authority houses owned by a local authority other than that controlling the area. As the Bill is drafted, it means that a town like Dagenham would have to make a payment to the Government towards the cost of rehousing in a new town people now living in the area who happen to be tenants of the L.C.C. or some other local authority. I think that is very unfair, and during the Committee stage the Parliamentary Secretary was good enough to say that he thought a strong case had been made out on that point. I therefore hope that he will be able to accept the Amendment.

Mr. Ellis Smith (Stoke-on-Trent, South)

I beg to second the Amendment.

Mr. Powell

I am advised that this Amendment does cover satisfactorily what I may call the Becontree point made by the hon. Member during the Committee stage, and I would ask the House to accept it.

Amendment agreed to.

Bill to be read the Third time Tomorrow.
