HC Deb 07 February 1956 vol 548 c1492
30. Mr. Swingler

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if his attention has been drawn to the resolution of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, sent to his Department, concerning the £900 increase in expenditure on dustbins in the current financial year due to the incidence of Purchase Tax; and what reply he will make to this protest.

Mr. H. Macmillan

Yes, Sir. The council were informed that I would take note of the resolution.

Mr. Swingler

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the members of the Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council cannot be very impressed with Treasury requests to reduce expenditure when the Government increase the council's expenditure by imposing taxes on necessities?
