HC Deb 10 December 1956 vol 562 c29
38. Mr. Beswick

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will now state the steps he is taking to expand and advance the programme for the generation of electricity by nuclear fuels.

Mr. Aubrey Jones

The future of the nuclear power programme is under urgent review, but I am not yet in a position to make a statement on it.

Mr. Beswick

is the Minister aware that, whilst there has been a case for review for some months because of the technical progress which has been made, the public is now expecting something in the nature of a "crash" programme in this matter? Can he tell us to what extent availability of nuclear material is a limiting factor in the expansion of the nuclear power programme?

Mr. Jones

I am aware of the considerations which the hon. Gentleman has adduced, but I would ask him to exercise patience and await the fuller statement I hope to make on this matter?

Mr. Beswick

Could the Minister tell us to what extent it is a question of the availability of fuel?

Mr. Jones

It is a question of all kinds of things. That, I am afraid, is why I am unable to make a statement today.
