HC Deb 04 December 1956 vol 561 cc1047-8
51. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Prime Minister if the speech of the Minister of Education at Malmesbury on Monday, 26th November, on the question of withdrawal from Egypt represents the policy of Her Majesty's Government.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Lord Privy Seal aware that the Minister of Education said, Americans believed that money was all that mattered in the Middle East"? Did that represent the view of Her Majesty's Government? Is the right hon. Gentleman further aware that the Minister of Education also said, Other countries did not have the Prime Minister's intuition of the looming danger"? Did that represent the view of Her Majesty's Government?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir, I think that the latter observation is particularly profound. I had the opportunity of reading the whole of my right hon. Friend's script, which is not a pleasure I usually have in respect of the speeches of my colleagues, and I thought that it was a masterly effort.
