HC Deb 18 April 1956 vol 551 cc998-9
28. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that there are signs that the United States Government is proceeding, with the support of the Spanish Government, to play a more active part in Gibraltar's affairs; and if he will make a statement as to how far this matter has gone.

Mr. Nutting

My right hon. and learned Friend has heard nothing which would substantiate the right hon. Gentleman's hypothesis.

Mr. Shinwell

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that my hypothesis has stemmed from information received from business people in Gibraltar; and will he keep a very watchful eye on the matter? Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there has already been far too much economic penetration in other parts of the world where our interests lie, and ought we not to be careful that economic penetration into Gibraltar is not intended for political purposes?

Mr. Nutting

I am aware of nothing which would substantiate what the right hon. Gentleman has just suggested. If he has information to that effect, perhaps he might care to send it to me.
