HC Deb 18 April 1956 vol 551 c1001
35. Miss Vickers

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the fact that English has now replaced Dutch as the foreign language taught in the schools in the Republic of Indonesia, he will consider providing easier facilities than at present, for higher education for Indonesian students in Great Britain.

Mr. Nutting

Her Majesty's Government consider that the best way to facilitate the entry of Indonesian students into institutions of higher education in the United Kingdom is to help them to attain the requisite standard of English. To that end the British Council, with Her Majesty's Government's full support, are assisting the educational authorities in Indonesia in their widespread English teaching programme.

Miss Vickers

Is my right hon. Friend aware that that reply will be most welcome to the students who are anxious to study in this country? Is he aware that the difficulty concerning language is likely to last for only five years? At present, the students have to go to the United States of America.
