HC Deb 27 October 1955 vol 545 c356
19. Mr. M. Stewart

asked the Minister of Education whether he will make an inquiry into the methods of ophthalmic inspection in schools; and, in particular, whether he will draw the attention of local education authorities to the importance of testing the vision of every child as soon as possible after entry to school.

Mr. Vosper

In his latest Report, my Department's chief medical officer drew attention to the importance of testing the vision of every child as soon as possible after entry to school; and I am glad to say that in an increasing number of areas it is the practice to do this during the child's first year at school.

Mr. Stewart

Has the hon. Gentleman noticed the comments on this matter in the Journal of the Association of Optical Practitioners? Will he see that the advice given in the Report to which he referred is followed by all authorities?

Mr. Vosper

I cannot accept all that is contained in that article, but this Question will be helpful in bringing to the notice of local authorities again the importance of this matter.
