Just a word about exports. It is difficult to define the trend of exports exactly, because of the interruptions of the dock strikes. So far as we can tell, the trend is rising at an appreciable rate. Our exports to the U.S.A. in particular will do better this year than they have been doing for some time past. But it is becoming increasingly clear that home demand and home spending are not only sapping the competitive power of our exports but are also drawing in a larger volume of imports than we can afford.
