HC Deb 16 November 1955 vol 546 c400
54. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if, in view of the needs of old-age pensioners, he will introduce legislation to authorise all public and private transport bodies to permit old-age pensioners to travel free or at reduced rates on public vehicles in a similar way to schoolchildren.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I have nothing to add to what was said on this subject by my hon. Friend the Joint Parliamentary Secretary on 18th February last.

Mr. Brockway

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that the situation has changed considerably since last February, that the cost of living has increased very heavily, and that rents are now to increase also? Can he not do something for old-age pensioners in relation to transport?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I do not think that any of the wise words which my hon. Friend used on that occasion have lost their force.
