§ 48. Mr. Emrys Hughesasked the Prime Minister if he will introduce legislation to abolish the use of titles.
§ The Prime MinisterNo, Sir.
§ Mr. HughesWhilst thanking the Prime Minister for that reply, may I ask him if he realises that an unanswerable case for abolishing titles has recently been stated by a well-known Conservative newspaper, on the ground that titles perpetuate snobbery and class distinction? Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is about the only country in the world that now continues this system of titles?
§ The Prime MinisterAs the hon. Member—if I may use that title without offence —may be aware, there are a number of different views and tastes on this matter.
§ Sir T. MooreMay I take it from my right hon. Friend's reply that such abolition would not preclude us from welcoming Marshal Bulganin or Hero of the Soviet Union Khruschev?
§ Captain PilkingtonWould my right hon. Friend indicate to the hon. Member for South Ayrshire (Mr. Emrys Hughes) that while there is life there is hope?
