HC Deb 08 November 1955 vol 545 cc1651-2
48. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Prime Minister if he will introduce legislation to abolish the use of titles.

The Prime Minister

No, Sir.

Mr. Hughes

Whilst thanking the Prime Minister for that reply, may I ask him if he realises that an unanswerable case for abolishing titles has recently been stated by a well-known Conservative newspaper, on the ground that titles perpetuate snobbery and class distinction? Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is about the only country in the world that now continues this system of titles?

The Prime Minister

As the hon. Member—if I may use that title without offence —may be aware, there are a number of different views and tastes on this matter.

Sir T. Moore

May I take it from my right hon. Friend's reply that such abolition would not preclude us from welcoming Marshal Bulganin or Hero of the Soviet Union Khruschev?

Captain Pilkington

Would my right hon. Friend indicate to the hon. Member for South Ayrshire (Mr. Emrys Hughes) that while there is life there is hope?
