HC Deb 08 November 1955 vol 545 cc1636-7
20. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representation he has received from the Crofters Commission concerning the proposed rocket range at South Uist.

Mr. J. Stuart

None, Sir.

Mr. Hughes

Could the Secretary of State say whether he has taken any initiative in this matter? Why is he taking the initiative in cutting down all kinds of useful expenditure in the North of Scotland and at the same time encouraging this useless luxury?

Mr. Stuart

This is the first time I have heard a projected missile range referred to as a luxury. It is not the kind of luxury which most hon. Members wish to enjoy. They regard it more as a necessity.
