HC Deb 08 November 1955 vol 545 c1640
31. Mr. John MacLeod

asked the Secretary for Scotland what representations have been made to him regarding the width of roads in the seven crofter counties in Scotland.

Mr. J. Stuart

The Highlands Advisory Panel has supported representations made by Inverness County Council to my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation that new and reconstructed trunk roads in the Highlands should have a double-width carriageway.

Mr. MacLeod

In view of my right hon. Friend's future responsibility for roads in Scotland and particularly in the Highland counties, I hope he is putting up a good fight against the mad policy of the Minister of Transport in building narrow roads with passing places in regions where traffic is increasing year by year and where more people are coming up to the Highlands. It is a dangerous policy, it is uneconomic, and my right hon. Friend should stop it forthwith.

Mr. Stuart

I am in constant communication with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport on these points, but the law prevents my actually taking any active responsibility until April Fools Day next.
