10. Mr. Vaneasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied that he has sufficient powers to prevent the re-introduction of healthy rabbits into areas now cleared by myxomatosis; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. AmoryI have no powers to prevent the re-introduction of healthy rabbits into areas cleared by myxomatosis, but under the Agriculture Act, 1947, I can require the destruction of the rabbits. I shall not hesitate to use those powers against persons who are found to have brought rabbits on to their land.
Mr. VaneIs my right hon. Friend aware that it is easier to tell people to destroy rabbits on their land than it is to see them destroyed? Is it not a fact that the action of a few selfish people can do inestimable harm to the industry as a whole as well as to their neighbours?
§ Dr. StrossCan the right hon. Gentleman say whether there is any evidence that any area has been absolutely and literally cleared of this pest by myxomatosis?
Mr. AmoryIf one means absolutely and literally down to the last rabbit, it is very difficult to get that evidence, but there is a lot of evidence that some areas have been cleared to the extent of, I should think, between 95 per cent. and 100 per cent.
