HC Deb 02 May 1955 vol 540 cc1345-6
52. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs our present financial responsibility in respect of reconstruction and rehabilitation in Korea; and what progress in this has been made in Korea.

Mr. Turton

Her Majesty's Government have recently made a final contribution of £535,715 to the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency. This brings our total payment to £9,585,715. Her Majesty's Government have also provided supplies to the value of approximately £470,000 as a contribution in kind towards reconstruction in Korea. The United Nations Reconstruction Agency has performed an invaluable task in relieving suffering in Korea, and has been of real assistance to the Korean economy.

Mr. Sorensen

Has this reconstruction and rehabilitation been operating in the north of Korea as well as in the south? How many nations have been participating in this progressive service to the unhappy people of that country? Can the hon. Gentleman also say what proportion of the total amount spent our £9 million represents?

Mr. Turton

I think that if the hon. Gentleman would put down the first two parts of his supplementary question I could give him a full answer. As to the last part, the Government have contributed roughly 20 per cent. Out of a total contribution of 127 million dollars our contribution has been 25 million dollars.

Mr. Shinwell

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether the services he has mentioned, financial and otherwise, include services rendered by our troops in Korea?

Mr. Turton

These are entirely our contribution to the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency. The sum of £470,000 that I mentioned is of supplies in kind which were given from military sources.

Mr. Sorensen

Would the hon. Gentleman say when I should put the extra Question down and to whom?

Mr. Turton

It depends on the optimism the hon. Gentleman has concerning his fortunes in the next three weeks?

Hon. Members

No, the Government's.
