HC Deb 02 May 1955 vol 540 cc1333-4
24. Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Health what number of hospital beds are available in Stoke-on-Trent for the Treatment of all conditions other than mental disease; and what is the total population which is served by this accommodation in North Staffordshire.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I am informed that the number in the group was 2,419 at the end of 1954 for an estimated population of 477,340.

Dr. Stross

Would it be fair to say that this is perhaps a little better than the national average?

Mr. Macleod

No, Sir. I think it is about five per 1,000 population, which would make it, though not far away, a little worse.
