HC Deb 21 June 1955 vol 542 cc1134-5
29. Mr. Strachey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if it is still the intention of Her Majesty's Government that exclusion of houses provided by a housing association from the Rent Restrictions Acts will only apply in cases where there was an agreement with the local authority and where Exchequer subsidies have been paid.

Mr. J. N. Browne

This matter is regulated by Section 25 of the Housing (Repairs and Rents) (Scotland) Act, 1954. The Section in effect excludes from rent control not only the categories of houses mentioned by the right hon. Member but also houses belonging to a housing association registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1893, which have been provided as part of its business before the commencement of the 1954 Act.

Mr. Strachey

Does the Northern Housing Association in Dundee, which is at present attempting to raise its rents under these Acts, come in one of these two categories?

Mr. Browne

Yes, Sir.
