HC Deb 21 June 1955 vol 542 c1134
13. Mr. Hannan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many families are still occupying former Service camps; and what further steps have been taken to rehouse them as a result of his discussions with the local authorities.

Mr. J. N. Browne

At 1st June, the number was 700, which compares with about 1,200 a year ago. My right hon. Friend is in close touch with the local authorities concerned about the rehousing of the remaining families so as to secure the closure of the camps and the release of the sites at the earliest possible date.

Mr. Hannan

What extra steps were taken following the consultation with the local authorities 15 months ago?

Mr. Browne

We have done very well so far. We shall not be satisfied until all these families are cleared. The remaining families are, of course, more difficult, but every step will be taken to try to solve the problem.
