HC Deb 20 June 1955 vol 542 c1027
42. Mr. Remnant

asked the Minister of Health what facilities are available for the rehabilitation of chronic arthritics.

The Minister of Health (Mr. Iain Macleod)

In addition to those hospitals which specialise in the treatment of rheumatic diseases, most large general hospitals have rehabilitation departments which provide a full range of facilities including various forms of physiotherapy and occupational therapy for chronic arthritics as for those suffering from other disabilities.

Mr. Remnant

Is my right hon. Friend aware that there are a number of coinplaints—or, at least there is a strong feeling—that much more could be done for this type of case, which is a very sad one?

Mr. Macleod

I think it probable that, in general, the facilities are reasonably adequate, but it may well be that there is a certain lack of liaison between hospital authorities and the different welfare services. That certainly is a matter I shall be glad to look into.
