HC Deb 15 June 1955 vol 542 c576
34. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he is aware of the disintegrating highways of Warwickshire; and why he has cut the grant to the county council by £60,000, which is approximately 10 per cent.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Warwickshire roads are not disintegrating. And I have increased their initial grant by £10,000 over that for last year. The last part of the Question does not therefore arise.

Mr. Johnson

Is the Minister aware that, according to the latest minutes of the county council, the vote is down by £60,000, that all parties unite in condemning his policy of parsimony in this matter, and that the engineer stated publicly that he cannot do his job adequately with this amount of money? Will the Minister not think again and look up his facts in order to get them correct?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The initial grant for last year was £360,000, and for this year is £370,000. With due respect to the minutes of the county council, those are the facts.
