§ 14. Mr. Hydeasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps he has taken, or is taking, to ensure that Mr. Cedric Belfrage, a British subject at 358 present detained under the United States Immigration and Nationality Act in New York, has adequate professional legal advice to enable him to appeal to the United States Supreme Court.
§ Lord John HopeThe firm of New York lawyers who have represented Mr. Belfrage from the beginning are experts in deportation proceedings and, if Mr. Belfrage decides to appeal to the United States Supreme Court, I am advised that they are well able to handle this matter.
§ Mr. HydeIs my hon. Friend aware that during the last war, when Mr. Belfrage was employed by Her Majesty's Government in New York, he rendered valuable service both to Her Majesty's Government and to the Government of the United States, and would he remind the Government of the United States of that fact?
§ Lord John HopeI am sure that they are well aware of that and of any other relevant circumstances.
