HC Deb 24 February 1955 vol 537 cc1437-8
35. Mr. E. L. Mallalieu

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why no adequate street guide is given to constables in the Metropolitan Police area.

Major Lloyd-George

All recruits are supplied with a copy of the best available London street guide of pocket size.

Mr. Mallalieu

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consult some of the officers who spend a very unprofitable time in the street defending his fiat as to whether that is so, and whether they have street guides? Is he aware that nearly every Metropolitan Police officer has to buy a guide himself? Does he not think that is a scandal?

Major Lloyd-George

I was not aware of that. I thought that every Metropolitan police constable, apart from special constables, did have a copy of the best London street guide. So far as I am concerned, there is no need for me to ask, as I do know my way home.
