HC Deb 02 February 1955 vol 536 cc1066-7
19. Sir W. Darling

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what damage was done to telephone and telegraph services in Scotland during the recent nation-wide blizzard; and when full services will be restored.

Mr. Gammans

Twenty-one small exchanges serving 600 subscribers in the extreme North of Scotland and in Orkney and Shetland were isolated for periods of one to three days between 10th and 19th January. In addition, about 4,000 subscribers' telephones were put out of order, mainly in the Edinburgh area. All telephone services were back to normal by 19th January. No damage was caused to telegraph lines.
