HC Deb 02 February 1955 vol 536 c1064
3. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General how many mailbags were stolen in transit during 1954 as compared with 1953.

Mr. Gammans

Four hundred and eighty-three bags were recorded as missing in 1954 as compared with 720 in 1953.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Does this reduction of between 200 and 250 bags represent the total result of all the additional security measures on which the Post Office has spent a comparatively large sum in the past year?

Mr. Gammans

I would point out to the hon. and gallant Gentleman that this very favourable figure is about one-third of what it was in the immediate post-war period and that we are dealing with about 350 million bags a year.
