HC Deb 28 April 1955 vol 540 cc1069-70
59. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if agreement has now been reached with the Prime Minister of Eastern Nigeria regarding the payment and status of the higher officials of his Government.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave yesterday to my hon. Friend the Member for Ilford, North (Mr. Iremonger).

Mr. Brockway

Is it not now clear that the object of the Nigerian Prime Minister was not to prejudice the position of British officials but to extend the appointment of African officials?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I think that in fairness to the Premier of the Eastern Region it would be better if I did not attempt to summarise the arguments which he used in three very lengthy statements. Aware, as I am, of the interest of the House, I will place those statements in the Library.
