§ 60. Mr. Brockwayasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if, in view of the recommended acceptance, with only minor amendments, of the Hancock constitutional reforms by the Lukiko Committee, he will facilitate the early return of the Kabaka to Uganda.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydI cannot at this stage usefully add to the statement I made in the House on 16th November.
§ Mr. BrockwayIn view of the intensity of feeling which still remains in Uganda, does not the Minister think that it would be of service to announce that the Kabaka is to be allowed to return to his people?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydThe hon. Member's Question referred to the recent report of the Lukiko Committee. In fairness to the Lukiko, I do not think that it would be proper for me to comment on the report of the Committee of the Lukiko until the Lukiko itself has had a chance to consider it. I may add that I believe we are gradually getting nearer the happy outcome which we all desire.
§ Mr. AwberyIs the Minister aware that if he agreed to the return of the Kabaka, he would be carrying out the wishes of the majority of the people of Uganda?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydIf the hon. Gentleman will look again at the statement which I made in November, and at the answer which I have given today, I think he will see the way in which events appear to be taking shape.
