HC Deb 05 April 1955 vol 539 cc992-3
42. Mr. C. Hughes

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will make a statement on the future of local government in Wales.

43. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what particular proposals he has in respect of the future of Welsh local government; and if he will make a statement.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (Mr. W. F. Deedes)

My right hon. Friend cannot at this stage add to the answer which he gave on this subject on 22nd March.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister aware that the problems of local government in Wales are quite distinct from those of the rest of the country? Has he read the latest memorandum of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire on the problems of the Principality, and will he bear in mind that distinction when plans for local government are formulated?

Mr. Deedes

I can assure the hon. Member that the distinction has not been overlooked by my right hon. Friend and will be borne in mind by the local government associations.
