HC Deb 16 November 1954 vol 533 c199
17. Mr. Osborne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the rate per annum for wages and salaries before taxation for the year 1954 to the latest convenient date as compared with £5,110 million and £2,585 million for 1951, respectively, as shown in the National Income and Expenditure Accounts published in August, 1954.

Mr. R. A. Butler

From the information so far available, it appears likely that the total of wages and salaries in 1954 will be between £9,250 and £9,300 million, compared with £7,695 million in 1951. I regret that separate figures for wages and salaries in 1954 cannot yet be obtained.

Mr. Osborne

When will the Chancellor be in a position to give the 1954 figures? Is he not aware that they should show that today the wage earner is getting far more than he ever got under a Socialist Administration?

Mr. Butler

Let us hope, firstly, that I get the figures and, secondly, that they show those results.
