HC Deb 16 November 1954 vol 533 cc198-9
15. Mr. Osborne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much of the increase in national expenditure on food from £2,949,000,000 in 1951 to £3,549,000,000 in 1953 was due to higher prices; and how much to greater volume of consumption.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Of the increase of £600 million in consumers' expenditure on food between 1951 and 1953, approximately £75 million represented an increase in volume of consumption at 1951 prices and £525 million was due to the increase in prices.
