HC Deb 02 November 1954 vol 532 c185
10. Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Works what funds he has at his disposal for purchasing works of art; and how purchases are selected.

Mr. Birch

In this financial year £6,000 has been voted for public buildings overseas and £600 for public buildings at home. In addition there is still £900 in the special fund for works of art provided by the generosity of private subscribers. Purchases are made by my Department on the advice of my Curator of Pictures.

Colonel Gomme-Duncan

Can the Minister say whether the famous picture "Autumn Landscape," which was put in the catalogue upside down without any apparent effect on its appearance, was purchased for this fund?

Mr. Birch

Not without notice.

Mr. Stokes

Has the Minister looked at the 900 oil paintings stored close together in a single room in Hampton Court to see whether something could be done to make those available for embassies and consulates abroad?

Mr. Birch

I will certainly look into that.
