HC Deb 26 May 1954 vol 528 c404
52. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many vacancies for medical officers exist in Northern Nigeria; and what is the establishment for such officers.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Oliver Lyttelton)

The establishment of medical officers for the Northern Region of Nigeria is 91, and there are at present 25 vacancies.

Mr. Tilney

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind the importance of seconding not only specialists but also general practitioners, and will he also look into the matter of their salaries, as compared with those paid in this country?

Mr. Lyttelton

We regard this matter as one of considerable concern, and we are doing our very best to try to get these vacancies filled.
