HC Deb 26 May 1954 vol 528 cc404-5
53. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the composition of the Sugar Central Board of Mauritius; and at what date the accountant upon this Board was appointed.

Mr. Lyttelton

The Board is composed of two representatives of the millers, two representatives of the larger planters, two representatives of the smaller planters, and a chairman appointed by the Governor. The present accountant to the Board was appointed on 11 th January, 1953.

Mr. Johnson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the long standing dissatisfaction of the planters in Mauritius? Will he think again about something I asked him two years ago, to send out an economist to inquire into the situation in the sugar industry?

Mr. Lyttelton

I have received no representations about the dissatisfaction of the planters, but I will look into the matter.
