HC Deb 25 May 1954 vol 528 cc179-80
5. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Works the cost of the work of reconstruction of Beaupré Castle, Glamorgan; when the work will be completed; and if the castle will be open free or at a charge to the public when the work is completed.

Sir D. Eccles

The cost of the work required to put the remains of Beaupré Castle into a proper state of preservation is estimated at £25,000. I can find only a small sum to spend on this important monument each year and I cannot say when the work will be completed. The castle is already open to the public free of charge while the men are at work; it will remain open when the work has been completed, and the question of an admission charge will be considered in due course.

Mr. Awbery

Is the Minister aware that this castle is a long way from the main road and that the narrow road leading to it and also the gates are in a deplorable condition, and will he give attention to putting the road in order so that visitors can approach the castle?

Sir D. Eccles

We had better consider that when we have completed the repairs.

Mr. Awbery

Can it not be done now, so that people can visit the castle while it is under repair?
