HC Deb 03 May 1954 vol 527 cc12-3
25. Mr. Renton

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that farmers still have large quantities of potatoes in possession and unsold from last season's crop; and what steps he is taking to ensure that these potatoes are satisfactorily disposed of without loss to farmers before further deterioration of their quality takes place.

Major Lloyd George

Surplus potatoes are being sold for stockfeeding, processed or exported as quickly as possible. Farmers are fully protected against loss by the rising seasonal scale of growers' prices and, should delivery not be taken of stocks offered to the Ministry, by the compensation arrangements provided in the contract.

Mr. Renton

Is my right hon. and gallant Friend quite sure that he will be fulfilling his obligation in this matter with respect to last season's potatoes?

Major Lloyd George

There is no question at all about it. The farmers are completely covered.
