asked the Minister of Food what steps he is taking to ensure that the staff of the meat and livestock division of his Department will be capable of dealing with the problems of deficiency payments after meat is derationed.

Major Lloyd George

I have set up a new division for these tasks. Training schemes for the operating staff will be completed before the end of June.

Mr. Royle

Can the right hon. and gallant Gentleman say how many clerks will have to be employed for the purposes of the deficiency scheme?

Major Lloyd George

There will be a good many, of course. I cannot say exactly how many there will be, but it will not be such a very great number. Many who will be employed under the new scheme are doing similar work now.

Mr. Royle

Does that mean that there will be very little reduction in the number of clerical staff employed at Guildford as a result of the deficiency scheme?

Major Lloyd George

A big decrease in a certain section of staff is not necessarily likely to occur, but if we take the staff of the Ministry as a whole there has been an enormous decrease in staff
