HC Deb 03 May 1954 vol 527 c10
19. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what specific arrangements for defence, arising out of the Anglo-Jordanian Treaty, have recently been entered into with the Kingdom of Jordan.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

In accordance with the Anglo-Jordan Treaty of Alliance of 1948, Her Majesty's Government and the Jordan Government consult regularly about common defence interests. These consultations take place through the Anglo-Jordan Joint Defence Board, which met last month at Amman. The hon. Member will not expect me to give details of the plans discussed.

Mr. Reid

Has the right hon. and learned Gentleman seen the statement made by the Government of Jordan, the gist of which was that whatever war Jordan undertook, including a war against Israel, Britain would join Jordan? Has he any comment to make on that statement?

Mr. Lloyd

The Foreign Secretary dealt with that point in a recent answer in the House. I have nothing to add to that answer.
